Investments in Forests and Sustainable Land Use Phase 2 - Component 3

Component 3: Business and market development in ‘thin’ markets (of the Congo Basin) Component 3 will provide grant funding to land sector interventions in Congo Basin countries that build sustainable production capacity, elementary market infrastructure, mobilise pioneer investment, enhance long-term private sector capacity and support business environment reform. This will encompass supply-side partnerships, demand-side measures and enabling conditions interventions. It will include business-led and smallholder-oriented solutions, with an exclusive focus on Congo Basin countries. Although they vary considerably, the operating contexts of Congo Basin countries typically present particularly difficult challenges for business-led and private-investment oriented sustainability solutions and carry particularly high costs and risks of ‘doing business’ for both private sector actors and donor-funded interventions. The precise intervention areas and discrete activities that will be supported by this programme component can only be fully determined in delivery, following rigorous analysis of the local context by the programme’s delivery partner.

The Role of Social Cultural and Environmental Factors in Improving Ebola Virus Disease Response and Resilience

The 2013-2015 outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa (Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone) was unprecedented, resulting in more than 11,000 human deaths with an estimated total cost of US$4.3 billion. The outbreak highlighted the need for a greater understanding of the social, economic, cultural, and physical environment factors that are essential to improving EVD response capacities and decreasing the risk of further outbreaks. This project aims to improve understanding of social and environmental factors as precursors for increased vulnerability to EVD outbreaks in susceptible communities. It also seeks to apply this knowledge to mitigate the outbreak potential of EVD and to improve response strategies to contain viral transmission and the spread of disease using community-based initiatives. This research is expected to generate new information on vulnerabilities associated with gender, age, and cultural association that will help to improve prevention and response capacities to EVD at the community, local, country, and international levels. This project is funded by the Rapid Research Fund for Ebola Virus Disease Outbreaks, a CA$1.5 million initiative that was m

Improving the response to Ebola crises with improved access to routine health information.

The 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone claimed thousands of lives and cost these countries at least $2 billion in lost GDP. The role of using existing data and information systems for such outbreaks is important to understand in order to strengthen health systems and improve resilience during outbreaks and in other humanitarian settings. This project will develop understanding of how routine health information on key health system measures can inform the ongoing and long-term response to the current Ebola crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and to develop tools that enable the use of this data in future public health crises. The project methods will use existing data to assess the state of health system responses to outbreaks like Ebola before, during, and after the outbreak in affected and non-affected areas. The second phase will primarily use qualitative methods to explore how the routine health information system was used by stakeholders, including frontline health workers, during the outbreak. Globally Scaling Digital Solutions for Managing Misinformation

There has been a dramatic and alarming rise in the prevalence of so-called “fake news” around the world in the past two years. While the phenomena of both disinformation (deliberately misleading information) and misinformation (incorrect information, usually not intentional) are not new, the degree of damage they can cause in an increasingly digital world is unprecedented. The newfound attention to disinformation in developed countries has resulted mainly from interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. By then disinformation was already negatively impacting perceptions of refugees arriving in Europe, and it has continued to do so. The Canadian government has begun to recognize the threats to Canada, particularly during future federal elections. These examples highlight the need for well-reasoned, research-based policy recommendations for governments both in Canada and worldwide. The primary goal of this project is to move the practices and methodologies of disinformation management into new physical and digital realms, to scale these programs into new use cases, and to investigate the impact of new tools and mechanisms to bridge the gap between offline and online effor
