Ports marked "Not yet assessed" are listed so coverage is visible; the absence of a rating is a gap in our work, not a statement that a port is safe. Ports marked "corridor" carry the exposure level assessed for the chokepoint or corridor they sit in, and their note names the judgement the level was taken from.

Chokepoints
Transit risk at the straits
Bab el-Mandeb
The narrow strait between Yemen and Djibouti/Eritrea remains the single most dangerous commercial passage in the region. Houthi forces have used anti-ship missiles, drones, uncrewed surface vessels and a helicopter-borne boarding against merchant ships since late 2023.
Gulf of Aden
Two overlapping threats: Houthi strikes reaching well east of the strait, and a revival of Somali piracy since December 2023, with dhows and fishing vessels used as mother ships.
Somali Basin
Pirate action groups have operated several hundred miles off the Somali coast since the MV Ruen and MV Abdullah hijacks. Activity follows the monsoon calendar.
Suez Canal
The canal itself is secure; the risk is to the approaches further south. Revenue loss adds economic pressure on Egypt.
Strait of Hormuz
The main risk is state seizure of tankers and harassment by Iranian forces, alongside heavy GNSS interference. Limpet-mine attacks occurred off Fujairah in 2019.
Gulf of Guinea
Reported piracy has fallen sharply since its 2020 peak, but crew kidnapping far offshore remains possible and under-reporting is likely.
Mozambique Channel
Insurgency ashore in Cabo Delgado has produced occasional coastal attacks; the channel is also a narcotics route. Extra traffic from Red Sea diversions increases exposure.
Eastern Mediterranean
Conflict involving Israel, Lebanon and Syria creates heavy GNSS interference and occasional threats to ports, with limited direct attacks on merchant shipping.
Cape of Good Hope route
The main alternative to Suez since the Red Sea attacks began. The threat is weather, port congestion and crime ashore rather than attacks at sea.
Strait of Gibraltar and North African coast
A busy, well-policed strait. The main issues are migrant crossings, drug smuggling and instability around Libyan ports.

How to read this dashboard
Exposure levels combine the threats reported against a port or its approaches, the reliability of the reporting, and what the pattern means for a vessel calling there. They are analytical judgements, reviewed by hand, and each one carries a written note.
Traffic volumes, berth availability and port condition are not shown here. Those need commercial data feeds this platform does not hold, so we do not publish placeholder figures for them.
For a voyage, we read port exposure against the corridor, the cargo and the war-risk conditions in force. Enquiries for bespoke assessment are handled through the contact page.
