Growing the pipeline for gender lens investing: Gender-Smart Entrepreneurship Education and Training (GEET) action strategy

Researchers at Telfer Business School at the University of Ottawa have developed an innovative framework called Gender-Smart Entrepreneurship Education & Training Plus (GEET+), which offers a toolkit of resources to support inclusive entrepreneurship education and training. GEET+ can be used by instructors and trainers to assess the status of equity, diversity, and inclusion in entrepreneurship courses and programs and to develop gender-smart curricula. It is among the first conceptual frameworks and scorecards to inform entrepreneurship and small business programs and courses. This project will help validate and test the GEET+ framework in four countries to strengthen entrepreneurial ecosystems and grow the pipeline of impact-driven businesses and investment in the Global South with a gender lens. The project will produce a white paper that summarizes the lessons and a toolkit of resources to assist stakeholders in engaging in the design and delivery of inclusive and gender-sensitive entrepreneurship education and training. The report will highlight the state of enterprise support for women entrepreneurs in Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, and Peru, including lessons learned and best pr

Blended finance, impact businesses and investing with a gender lens: Fostering collaboration and developing a forward-looking agenda

Blended finance (using official development assistance to leverage private capital for sustainable development) is gaining traction as part of an innovative finance mechanism for achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Although momentum is building, movement towards a new financing model is slow in developing countries, and the effects and possibilities are not well understood. Canada recently launched a series of innovative finance initiatives. In January 2018, the Development Finance Institute Canada (FinDev) started operations to deliver innovative financial solutions to inclusive businesses with the potential to create jobs, empower women, and mitigate climate change. In August 2019, Canada launched the International Assistance Innovation Program, which aims to promote sustainable development impacts through its investments. Both finance mechanisms put gender at their core. The recently launched Canada’s Equality Fund includes a gender lens impact investing strategy to leverage finance as a tool to scale and transform systems for gender equality. Empowering Women as Key Leaders in Promoting Community-Based Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction in Niger Delta Region

Rural communities in the Niger Delta are highly vulnerable to climate-related disasters, which also makes them effective incubators of community-based adaptation strategies. These strategies are often initiated and led by women, who play crucial roles in building the social fabric that makes such adaptation possible. Empirical investigations of climate variability and long-term change, the vulnerability of women and girls, and local adaptation strategies in the Niger Delta have not been given enough attention. The project aims to contribute to socially equitable development by promoting women-led, community-based initiatives on climate-change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. The project will focus on Delta State, which is the largest state with settlements in the three main ecological zones found within the region — mangrove swamp, freshwater swamp, and lowland rainforest. The project will conduct research, training, and pilot activities in ten rural communities located in the three ecological zones. A total of 15 community-based adaptation strategies will be tested, including strategies for water preservation, water use, access to potable water, protection of humans and
