Strengthening engineering ecosystems in sub-Saharan Africa
This project responds to the significant gaps that exist in advanced training and research in applied science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in sub-Saharan Africa. Skills in these fields are often either lacking or students are not well equipped for the national or regional job market.
Five pilot projects across sub-Saharan Africa, selected through an open competition and an independent review panel, will explore ways in which engineering research and education in Africa can be strengthened. The five projects touch on various aspects related to how STEM training and research can more effectively achieve social and economic impact throughout the region. These projects are:
• Product design in the engineering curriculum (Nigeria)
• Building capacity in water engineering in East Africa to support the Sustainable Development Goals (Tanzania)
• Supporting leading innovations in water resources management (Ghana)
• University co-op programs in East Africa (Tanzania)
• Supporting STEM research cultures in Africa: Building institutional capacity for computing research (Kenya)
Project leaders will contribute to regional and global understanding by studying their nati

Readiness to Adopt Food Related Non-Communicable Disease Prevention Policies in Africa
Increasing consumption of unhealthy diets is fuelling the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) across Sub-Saharan Africa. Fiscal and policy interventions for addressing diet-related NCDs such as increased taxation on Sugar Sweetened Beverages (SSBs) have been endorsed by the global health community as being highly cost-effective. There are however significant challenges associated with the adoption and implementation of such interventions due to their inherent nature in politics and the economy.
To establish a comprehensive understanding of the political landscape in which policies for NCDs are developed and implemented, this project proposes a landscape analysis in a subset of Eastern (Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya) and Southern African (Botswana, Namibia and Zambia) countries. The aim of the project is to assess the existing and required evidence on the potential benefits of NCD-related fiscal and policy interventions, and an assessment of the challenges for their possible adoption. Understanding the nature of the burden of disease, data constraints, relevant politico-economic factors, key actors and the existing policy environment will help to develop feasib

Improvement of Theileria parva sporozoite vaccine against East Coast fever
In East and Central Africa, the most important tick-borne disease of livestock is East Coast fever, caused by the intracellular parasite Theileria parva. More than one million cattle die of East Coast fever annually, resulting in approximately CA$361 million in losses. Mortality rates approach 90% in susceptible cattle, and animals that recover are long-term Theileria parva carriers that act as sources of further infection for susceptible cattle.
The main methods of disease prevention rely on restricting cattle movements, tick control, or immunization. The first two methods are difficult to enforce. The immunization method involves inoculation of cattle with a live vaccine and concurrent long-acting oxytetracycline treatment to minimize clinical signs. Although the vaccine is efficacious, its production is cumbersome and expensive. Additional technical challenges include dose standardization, the requirement for a large number of cattle to determine the dose, and tick protein contamination. The requirement for concurrent treatment using long-acting oxytetracycline makes the method even more expensive, consequently reducing adoption.
By end of the 30 months, this project should d

The Institutional Canopy of Conservation
This project aims to conserve East Africa's rich biodiversity by strengthening local livelihoods through community-based conservation programs. Initiatives such as improved access rights to natural resources, income diversification, and green economic development (ecotourism, for example) will help East Africans advance conservation efforts and create opportunities.
Community-based conservation in Africa
The project will identify the most effective designs for community-based conservation programs by studying the impact of a range of conservancy experiments on local livelihoods, attitudes, and natural resource practices. Its findings will address critical public policy issues regarding communities' rights and responsibilities in collaborative natural resource management.
The project will focus on the rangelands, wetlands, and forests of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. This region has the richest concentration of biodiversity and wildlife in Africa.
Sustaining wildlife populations
Pastoralists and customary hunter-foragers in the region are crucial to sustaining wildlife populations threatened by land use changes, range fragmentation, poaching, and loss of grasslands, wetlands, a
