Investments in Forests and Sustainable Land Use Phase 2 - Component 3

Component 3: Business and market development in ‘thin’ markets (of the Congo Basin) Component 3 will provide grant funding to land sector interventions in Congo Basin countries that build sustainable production capacity, elementary market infrastructure, mobilise pioneer investment, enhance long-term private sector capacity and support business environment reform. This will encompass supply-side partnerships, demand-side measures and enabling conditions interventions. It will include business-led and smallholder-oriented solutions, with an exclusive focus on Congo Basin countries. Although they vary considerably, the operating contexts of Congo Basin countries typically present particularly difficult challenges for business-led and private-investment oriented sustainability solutions and carry particularly high costs and risks of ‘doing business’ for both private sector actors and donor-funded interventions. The precise intervention areas and discrete activities that will be supported by this programme component can only be fully determined in delivery, following rigorous analysis of the local context by the programme’s delivery partner.

Working with Nature to Protect People - STREAM

Unlocking the humanitarian potential of Nature-based Solutions Reducing disaster risk by cultivating healthy ecosystems, safe communities, and thriving businesses. This project is part of the Nile Basin Initiative, a Red Cross program aiming to use the power of nature to reduce disaster risks with communities across the Nile River Basin. Over the course of 20 years, it seeks to test and then scale nature-based solutions together with communities in four countries: Sudan, South-Sudan, Ethiopia, and Uganda. The program explicitly shifts from sectoral projects, limited in time and space, to locally-initiated experimentation that addresses underlying causes of vulnerability together with expert partners. Integrating nature in humanitarian efforts is quite a paradigm shift for the Red Cross, but one that is already well underway. By experimenting and scaling nature-based solutions in the Nile River Basin, we contribute to this paradigm shift.

Sudan Economic Impact and Reform (SEIR) Programme

To support Sudan’s economic recovery and lay the groundwork for growth by i. Mitigating the impact of economic reforms on the poorest and most vulnerable through social impact mitigation programming. ii. Providing technical assistance (TA) to the Government of Sudan to lead and implement a successful economic reform programme in line with IMF guidance supported by a comprehensive, cross government Poverty Reduction Strategy. iii. Helping prepare the Government of Sudan for debt relief under the Highly Indebted Poor Country (HIPC) process so that in future it is able to access resources from International Financial Institutions (IFIs). The programme will support Sudan’s progress towards SDG1 – halving the numbers of people living in poverty – by reducing the risk of economic collapse and supporting Sudan’s economy to become a platform for future growth. Reducing inflation and arresting the collapse of the currency will alleviate the number of people requiring humanitarian aid.

2020 - Sudan Floods

Sudan is facing one of the worst flooding situations seen for more than 70 years. According to initial reports approximately 100 people have died, at least 100,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed, and more half a million people are affected. These figures are expected to increase significantly as access to the affected areas remains extremely challenging and assessments are still ongoing. Humanitarian needs are rapidly increasing as the country faces multiple shocks beside the floods, including the economic crisis, violence and disease outbreaks, and more rainfall is expected. The Government of Sudan has declared a three month nationwide state of emergency, appealing for assistance from civil society and humanitarian national and international organizations to respond to the flood affected population. Almost every state has been affected and according to the Ministry of Irrigation, the river Nile recorded the highest water level in Khartoum since 1912, over 17.62 metres. Rapid needs assessments indicate significant damage to houses, properties and livelihoods, disruption of transport networks, roads and water and sanitation infrastructure, and lack of access to markets and hea

Counter terrorism project for North Africa - phase II

This regional project aims to provide technical assistance in Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Sudan, and Tunisia, to disrupt foreign terrorist fighter mobility. It seeks to enhance counter-terrorism capacities addressing the transnational threat posed by Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant in this region. The project does so by providing law enforcement professionals modernized equipment and training to strengthen inclusive and gender-responsive strategies for preventing, detecting and combatting terrorism in the Middle East and North Africa region. Project activities include: (1) investigating crime scene; (2) providing effective border management techniques; (3) delivering gender-sensitive training for frontline law enforcement officers, border officers and women police cadets; and (4) establishing regional working groups for enhanced cross-border coordination and information sharing.

Education for all South Sudan

The project aims to improve the capacity of girls and boys with disabilities, community, state, and national level actors to increase access to quality secondary education and graduation levels. At the national level, cash transfers are provided to girls and boys with disabilities and catch-up classes to help them successfully (re)integrate and complete grades 7 to 12. Also, the project seeks to strengthen the education system at national and subnational level for better service provision, national budget allocation and accountability. It also informs, educates, and motivates community members (girls, boys, women and men, parents, teachers and community leaders) to promote quality education completion, with an emphasis for children with disabilities who face increased discrimination. Scalable geographic pilots are designed to improve life skills education for children with disabilities with tailored support to schools and teachers to address discrimination and meet their specific needs.

Global Mine Action Programme 3

The UK has had an historic role in talking the legacy of landmine and Explosive Remnants of War. We were one of the founding signatories to the Land Mine Ban Treaty of 1997, In the 24 years since then, the UK has supported some of the poorest countries around the world to clear landmines and ERW after conflict, building up considerable knowledge and experience in the mine action sector. UK funding for mine action saves lives, releases land for productive use and helps pace the way for further development programming. Through land mine and ERW clearance, mine risk education activities and capacity development of national and provincial authorities this programme will increase stability and security for people in countries affected by landmines and ERW.

Access to water and better hygiene in Terekeka

An estimated 5,712,000 South Sudanese women, men and children will not have access to adequate water; sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in 2019. In addition, some 300,000 refugees lack sufficient WASH conditions. The number of people requiring emergency WASH services in 2019 increased by 7 per cent from the previous year, explained by the expansion of WASH data with a higher reliability and more detailed analysis1. WASH needs are the highest in Canal, Fangak and Pibor in Jonglei, Awerial in Lakes, Panyijar in Unity, and Ikwotos in Eastern Equatoria. While Awerial and Fangak remained two counties with the highest WASH needs, they represent a shift from last year that saw Fashoda of Upper Nile, Ayod of Jonglei, Rubkona of Unity and Juba of Central Equatoria. The lack of sufficient WASH infrastructure and availability has an effect on the overall health of the population. Outbreaks of diarrhea, cholera and other waterborne diseases are of high concern. Moreover, women and girls in areas with limited WASH infrastructure face increased risk of harassment, assault and sexual violence when collecting water from remote water sources and using inappropriate communal latrines, and access to
